Southwold Harbour lies to the south west of the town, just beyond the South Green and Gun Hill. About half a mile from the town centre. It can be accessed along either York Road or Ferry Road or by boat! |

The harbour was once the heart of the town and its economy. In the 11th century doomsday book, Southwold is recorded as a most prosperous fishing port. Its maritime success continued until just after the First World War with Herring being the main catch. Shortly after, its usage declined leading to its virtual abandonment as an industrial harbour. The sight and sound of fishermen working has now been replaced with modern pleasure yachts and the sound of children on holiday. The harbour retains however, its sense of grandeur, and it doesn’t take much imagination to envisage it in its former glory; full of colourful fishing boats and the smell of the fresh catch. Fish can still be found on sale at the harbour and it remains a bustling part of the town. The harbour facilities include a large car park and the Alfred Corry Museum, which houses the 1893 No. 1 lifeboat ‘Alfred Corry’. |

The harbour is ideal for a leisurely stroll and the chance to enjoy some good old fish and chips. Also, from the harbour, there is a ferry service to the neighbouring village of Walberswick, a popular day trip in the summer season. You can also reach there by walking across the Bailey bridge which offers beautiful views back across Southwold and the harbour. |
